Spencer Schaffner. Forthcoming in 2019. Literacy and Subjection: Writing as Punishment in Schools, Courts, and Everyday Life. Tuscaloosa, AL: University of Alabama Press.

A critical treatment of how teachers, judges, parents, sex traffickers, and even drunken partiers have turned to writing to control and shame others. This study shows that the prevalence of forced writing (from written lines to forced tattoos) stems from cultural beliefs in writing as capable of transforming writers and revealing their "true selves," and I argue that more pedagogical uses of writing are implicated in these beliefs as well.

Spencer Schaffner. 2011. Binocular Vision: the Politics of Representation in Birdwatching Field Guides. Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press

Starting with popular field guides from the late nineteenth century and moving ultimately to the electronic guides of the current day, Binocular Vision contextualizes birdwatching field guides historically, culturally, and in terms of a wide range of important environmental issues.
