What is Footnotes?
For those of you who are new to the department, Footnotes is the English Department’s weekly newsletter. Footnotes will contain important Graduate College deadlines, submission deadlines for call for papers, conference announcements, registration deadlines, faculty accomplishments and graduate student accomplishments (if permission form is turned in) as well as other valuable information.
To submit information for future editions, please send the information to email@example.com or put the flyer or brochure that contains the information in mailbox #94. All information needs to be received by Thursday in order to be included in the following Monday’s edition.

Dissertation Travel Grants

Conference Travel Grants
Applications for fall 2012 Conference Travel Grants have been distributed by email. If you did not receive an application please stop by the Grad Studies Office or contact Stephanie Shockey at email@example.com . Applications are due to Stephanie Shockey on September 17.
Anyone wanting an updated picture should see Chris in 210 EB by September 21. Updates will not be available to be taken September 4-September 14. These pictures will be posted in the glass case outside 208 EB.
Rebecca Bechtold successfully defended her dissertation “Composing the Body: Narrative in the Age of Improvisation, 1770-1867.” (Loughran, Ch.; Chai, Murison, Wood) on 5/4/12.
Agnieszka Tuszynska successfully defended her dissertation “Strangers from Within, Strangers from Without: Negotiations And Uses of Space in African American and Immigrant Literatures and Cultures, 1900s-1950.” (Nelson, Ch.; Barrett, Foote, Parker) on 5/8/12.
Debleena Biswas successfully passed her Special Field exam with distinction on Post-Colonial Studies (Nelson, Ch.; Markley, Warrior, Byrd) on 5/11/12.
Cory Holding successfully defended her dissertation “Rhetorical Gestures in British Elocutionism” (Hawhee, Ch.; Prior, Hawisher, Powers, Underwood, Camargo) on 7/31/12.
Darren Penn successfully passed his Special Field exam on Transatlantic Modernism 1880-1950 (Nelson, Ch.; Mahaffey, T. Newcomb, Blake) on 8/23/12.

September 3: Labor Day (all campus holiday)
September 10: Last day to add a first-half session course
September 10: Last day for student to add a semester course without permission
September 10: Deadline to submit forms to elect to audit a course for the semester
October 5: Last day to elect credit/no-credit option for a first half-session course or to change
from credit/no-credit option to a regular grade
October 5: Last day to drop a first half-session course
October 19: Last day for student to drop a semester course on Web Self-Service
October 22: Second half-session courses begin
October 29: Registration for spring begins. Start times vary. See you time ticket for your exact
enrollment time at UI Integrate Self-Service
November 9: Last day to add a second half-session course
November 16: Last day to withdraw from the current term without a grade of W
November 16: Last day to elect credit/no-credit option for a semester course or to change from
credit/no-credit option to a regular grade
November 16: Last day for student to drop a semester course without a grade of W (without
November 16: Last day to take final exam for December doctoral degree
November 16: Last day to add name to Dec degree list. Must use Web Self-Service
Nov 17 - 25: Fall vacation for students
Nov 22 - 23: Thanksgiving Break (all campus holiday)
November 26: Instruction resumes
November 30: Deadline for Graduate Student Academic Services office to receive the final exam
Certificate of Result
December 7: Last day to complete deposit of December doctoral dissertations
December 7: Last day to elect credit/no-credit option for a second half-session course or to change
from credit/no-credit option to a regular grade
December 7: Last day to drop a second half-session course
December 12: Instruction ends
December 13: Reading Day
December 13: Last day to add or drop a second half-session course with approval (a W is recorded)
December 13: Last day to add or drop a semester course with approval (a W is recorded)
December 13: Last day to change a grade of DFR (in a non-thesis course) or I, awarded last spring or
summer to prevent F by rule
December 14: Last day to complete deposit of December master’s theses
Dec 14 – 20: Final examination period
December 21: Last date for receipt of completed petitions in the Graduate College for graduating
December 24: December degree conferral (no commencement)
